What Happens in Ink & Influence
A place to write, think, experiment and grow
Ink & Influence is not built around one formula or one type of writing.
Students write for different audiences, purposes and situations, including:
- Narrative writingStories, fiction and nonfiction
- Descriptive writingLearning to make people, places and moments vivid
- Persuasive writingArguments, letters and other forms of persuasion
- Expository writingExplaining, informing and organising ideas clearly
- Creative writing & poetryExperimenting with language, sound, imagery and form
- Real-world writingJournalism and other purposeful forms of writing
Along the way, students develop the skills behind strong writing:
- Brainstorming and developing ideas
- Organising thoughts and information
- Building effective sentences and paragraphs
- Expanding and choosing vocabulary
- Understanding audience and purpose
- Revising and editing
- Giving and receiving feedback
Students will read great writing, experiment with language, take risks, make mistakes, revise and discover their own voices.
And then they share it.
Public speaking is woven into the workshop. Students will regularly present and read their work aloud, practise expression and delivery, and learn how to communicate their ideas to an audience.
The year will culminate in an End-of-Year Show, where students will present an original piece of work.
Because writing and public speaking have something important in common: both are skills that become stronger with practice, confidence and guidance.
